What will my toddler/older child eat?

At 25 months old, she preferred a sippy cup and drank pear juice (purchased
in China) diluted and lots of water and the Chinese drinkable yogurt (she loved
that). (I'm glad to see Dannon now makes something similar - she loves it). I
had a juice size bottle & a sippy cup that had several different tops - you
could use a nipple, soft sippy top or firm sippy top. We used these almost
exclusively. She couldn't handle the Platex no spill cups - she couldn't suck
hard enough to get it out. Emily is not a big milk drinker yet. She prefers 2%
or skim vs whole milk now. She will drink milk with her lunch or on cereal or
hot chocolate. She was and is a good eater and loves lots of different fruits
and vegetables. Not a big meat eater even today. Still loves juice. Those 1st 6
mos she would go on eating binges where she would eat watermelon or grapes or
cantaloupe, etc. 3 times a day until she had her fill and then move on to
something else. She also went through phases of not eating. That was probably
more a 2 yr old than adoption related.
In China, she ate most any fruit or vegetable from the buffet and rice and
steamed egg (Chinese dish that is more like custard to us) & of course,
congee (rice gruel). I took rice cereal which she ate and she ate my instant
oatmeal, granola bars, lots of Cheerios, graham crackers, cheese n peanut butter
crackers, and she loved to roam the hotel hall and look to see what the other
kids had for treats. She would make herself at home and help herself, it was
within her reach. She was not used to chewing a lot so at 1st I had to really
watch that things were soft or very small bites. She ate all the time. She
wasn't used to food being available any time, all the time. I think she was
afraid that there wasn't going to be more so she would eat everything she could
find.

Our baby was eighteen months old. She had a full bottle and a
full meal, whatever she could manage to chew. She did enjoy the rice soups.

At 33 months old, Mia's favorite foods in China were the Congee and the
steamed eggs. We would mix the steamed eggs with rice or she would also
eat the eggs by themselves. She also loved hard boiled and fried eggs but
didn't eat much of the white, went straight for the yolk. She didn't like
milk, but loved the yogurt juice boxes (which by the way, were plentiful in the
Holiday Inn in Hefei, but I only found out of date ones in Guangzhou, and
wished I had stocked up in Hefei). Mia loved pineapple juice and bottled
water. Mia also couldn't drink out of the no spill sippy cups. We
would carry them around with the cover, but when it was time for her to drink,
we would take off the cover and let her drink like a regular cup. She
was/is a big spiller. I wished I had taken the Rubbermaid cups with the
flip top and the built in straw. She uses them at home now. They
would have been great in China.
She also loved cheerios and raisins. She wasn't much of a fruit
eater in China, but loves most fruits now. She also loved peas and would
pick them out of whatever they were mixed in just to eat them by
themselves. Mia could hold a spoon properly, did not know how to use
chopsticks, and everyone's plate on the table was up for grabs. She would
take food off of whoever's plate she was near. Likewise, drop food she
didn't like on whoever's plate she could get to. Six months later, she
isn't quite as bad, but this "free for the taking and dropping" food
thing is a constant battle. I guess some habits die hard.

At 10.5 months, Lauren was basically on
formula but also was eating soft table
foods. I asked the nanny what Lauren's favorite things to eat were & she
responded "steamed eggs and apples"
- I was really glad that I had brought some apple
sauce with me. I generally fed her a bottle just before we ate & then
would also give her soft foods from my plate.
She ate everything in sight! Lauren
never would eat any baby food that I bought. I guess it didn't have enough
flavor.
